About the Portfolio

The production of an electronic portfolio in your senior CAPSTONE course is a Department REQUIREMENT. It will be reviewed by the MCAT faculty.

The portfolio can be viewed here, or by clicking on Department Goals in the navigation bar above.

It consists of (7) items that demonstrate an understanding of the department goals.  There should be one example under each goal and samples of work from freshman and senior years.

Students will include a Reflection statement under each example that discusses why they believe that item demonstrates an understanding and achievement of the department goal.  Works MUST come from classes within the major core or emphasis area.Department Goals are as follows:

  1. To communicate effectively in person
  2. To communicate effectively through multiple media
  3. To analyze and critically evaluate messages produced in different media
  4. To identify and discuss historical, ethical and legal issues related to the student’s chosen emphasis area
  5. To demonstrate potential to work as a professional in the chosen emphasis area
  6. Freshman Example
  7. Senior Example

Carson Schlegel

I am a Mass Communications Major at Lander University and am also a member of the baseball team. I will be receiving my bachelors degree in the spring of ’21 and will be looking to go into the Social Media or Public Relations field for an occupation.

Goal 1: To Communicate Effectively in Person – Speech 101 Informative Speech

9/11 Memorial | Manhattan, NY 10007

Reflection: I believe that this Speech 101 Informative speech accomplishes the goal of being able to communicate effectively in person perfectly. I was able to pick a topic that was important to me, write an outline, and then present it in person to 20 people in the audience.

Goal 2: To communicate effectively through multiple media – Social Media Specialist Powerpoint

Goal 3: To analyze and critically evaluate messages produced in different media – Media 311

Goal 4: To identify and discuss historical, ethical and legal issues related to the student’s chosen emphasis area- PR crisis

Goal 5: To demonstrate potential to work as a professional in the chosen emphasis area- Toyota Recall PR crisis

Goal 6: Freshman Example- Jason Burke Interview Script

Goal 7: Senior Example- Social Monitoring v.s Social Listening Research paper

Who is Social Media Specialist

Reflection: For the goal of being able to communicate effectively through multiple media, I chose to use my Social Media Specialist Powerpoint. In this class we learned how to communicate through different types of media and this powerpoint communicates my career goals and path through words and images.

Thief cleans out Dehradun shop, but leaves behind THIS evidence, arrested - News Nation English

Reflection: My analysis paper from Media 311 fits perfectly with the goal to analyze and critically evaluate messages produced in different media. Our professor began the class by giving us little details and trying to get us to pretend we were reporters interviewing someone that had just got robbed. Coincidentally, a former student had just got robbed and we had to take the information he gave us and write a report about the incident.

Coca-Cola fights obesity? Oh, please. – Food Politics by Marion Nestle

The Coca Cola PR crisis was a great way to identify and discuss historical, ethical and legal issues related to the student’s chosen area of emphasis. This case study was a great way to see how companies handle certain situations. I have considered Public Relations before but am also considering being a social media specialist. I see similarities between the two jobs though. Marketing, strategy, and being able to show a good light on your company.

Toyota Recall Information | Bondy's Enterprise Toyota | Near Dothan

The Toyota Recall crisis shows the ability to demonstrate potential to work as a professional in the chosen emphasis area because I am able to learn from previous situations such as this and create ideas and solutions from past studies and experiences.

Jason Burke | Lander University

My Freshman Example was an interview with Head Baseball Coach at Lander University, Jason Burke. This showed that I still had a lot to learn in the communication field and did not know how to direct and interview but I was still proud with what I could produce.

My Senior Example shows my ability to take on a tougher subject and really break it down and get multiple pieces of information out of two similar things. It also shows how much my writing has improved since my freshman year, with the organizing and grammar.
